Strength and confidence for kids
To promote health and social skills for young children, this project will refurbish and equip Viva Rio's School of Martial Arts in Costa Barros.
Many of Rio’s youth were born in an environment of extreme violence, particularly in the favelas and on the outskirts of the city. To get young people off this path, Viva Rio is promoting Education and Sports actions that will stimulate children and adolescents. The project FAZ PAZ, in partnership with Municipal Health Units and the representative institutions of those local communities, promotes healthy habits through martial arts, offering courses in Muay Thai, Jiu-Jitsu, Capoeira, Taekwondo and Percussion. More than 400 children and teenagers are enrolled in the activities, which beyond stimulating healthy habits, also prioritize education and stimulate socialization.
How OMEGA will help
Benefitting 400 students every year, the aim with this project is to improve the Martial Arts courses for children and teenagers in Marechal Hermes and Costa Barros neighborhood, with the renovation and equipping of a new space for practicing sports, stimulating self-knowledge, solidarity and responsibility.
The action will also encourage healthy practices, especially regarding drug prevention and body care.
New uniforms will be purchased, along with pairs of gloves, punching bags, mats, musical instruments, and new capoeira pants.
Before young people move into the job market, the last few years of their learning are critical. This project will equip their schools with the necessary tools.
For children who are falling behind their studies, educational tutoring and cultural and social activities are key to their development. However, these initiatives are not available at regular schools. That is why Viva Rio believes that education outside of school hours is a great opportunity to stimulate new knowledge and to support these children.
